Description
PALM DESERT, CA — One person was killed after a vehicle went off State Route 77 and over a cliff in the San Jacinto Mountains Saturday, fire officials said.
The incident was reported at 10:45 a.m. near Pinyon Pines, the Riverside County Fire Department reported.
The victim was ejected from the vehicle, which fell about 200 to 300 feet down an embankment. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
When firefighters arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The fire was out by 11:29 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol was investigating the incident.
The crash prompted a Sigalert, and SR-74 was temporarily shut down in both directions from the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center to SR-371, according to the CHP.
The highway reopened at around 2:55 p.m.
