How can you lump "student loans" in with mortgages and car payments? That's not even remotely the same thing. True, "debt is debt". However, do you really need to buy that new $60,000 car(or think you need it), or buy that $850,000 house in the Bay Area? That's a choice. You don't have to buy that car or invest in that property. Might it make sense, maybe...possibly? You don't need to buy a brand new car(worst investment ever), or get sucked into a million dollars to buy a home here. Might it make financial sense? That depends. Sometimes it is better and more economical to pay on a mortgage for 20 years rather than be a slave to a slum lord and the mortgage is cheaper(or almost the same as monthly rent) than paying rent. At least in the end, "you own it". However, "education" is more than just a simple choice of buying that car you always wanted, or the house of your dreams. Do you want to work in a service job forever making minimum wage, or do you want a carer that will(hopefully) provide you the standard of living you are striving for instead of pushing buttons on a cash register, answering phone calls/doing office work or taking food orders? To do that, college and "higher education" is required(there is no choice). Trade jobs don't pay what they used to and it isn't easy to "get in", and as the economy rises and falls and when inflation gets a strangle hold, money doesn't seem to go as far as it did before. Putting the additional financial strain on students "who want better" for themselves still makes "no sense" no matter how you look at it. You shouldn't have to take a second mortgage on your home or be forced to take out a student loan that is almost enough to buy and average house in order to make a better life for yourself. That's just STUPID. That's just another form of slavery no matter who you are. Re: RE: forgiving student loans (Walnut Creek) Free college is another conversation, and good luck with that. Many people making a lot of money off of it. In the meantime, forgiving student debt cannot be an option. If it is, then what's next? I'd like forgiveness of my mortgage and auto loans also, etc. I fear that the young generations are getting taught that they're not responsible for their own lives. Thinking like that isn't healthy, no matter who you are. Have a good day.
