Assembled by pianist, composer, and arranger Renee Rosnes, Artemis is a true all-star super band of modern jazz masters, each a major bandleader and composer. A veteran of work with Joe Henderson, J.J. Johnson, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Bobby Hutcherson, Rosnes has led 18 albums and is among the most accomplished pianists in jazz. She serves as musical director for this staggeringly talented ensemble that includes Juno Award-winning trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, multiple DownBeat Critics Poll-topping clarinetist Anat Cohen, bassist and BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Jazz composition prize-winner Noriko Ueda, the masterful New York-based drummer Allison Miller, and the newest member of the group, New York-born tenor saxophonist Nicole Glover. Named for the Olympian goddess of exploration, the hunt, and the wild, Artemis is an international affair, with members hailing from the U.S., Canada, Israel, and Japan. The band’s debut album ARTEMIS on Blue Note Records is a superb nine-song set that features material composed and/or arranged by each of the band’s six instrumentalists. ARTEMIS unfurls with a dynamic flow, stunningly eclectic yet entirely cohesive. “The group identity emerged organically,” Rosnes says, and ARTEMIS discovered a thrilling collective vision early in its lifespan. “We are six leaders, each with our own vision and personal point of view, but we play with a unified conception.” “The Greek goddess Artemis is an explorer, a protector of young children, and a goddess of the hunt,” explains Jensen, who conceived of the band’s name. “I feel that her character is indicative of the energies and wide array of musical tapestries that ARTEMIS the band brings to the stage as we take our music to the moon and beyond.” ARTEMIS has been featured on the cover of DownBeat, in Vanity Fair, on NPR’s Jazz Night in America, and has performed on some of the country’s most iconic stages from Carnegie Hall to the Newport Jazz Festival.
