Press release from City of Moorpark: March 31, 2022 The City of Moorpark has received a $775,750 federal grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to construct a fully inclusive playground at Tierra Rejada Park (11900 Mountain Trail Street). The grant amount represents approximately half of project cost. The grant funds will be used to upgrade the Tierra Rejada Park playground into a fully inclusive playground with play features and amenities for persons of all abilities. In addition to slides and swings, there will be a number of fully inclusive play features, including wide ramps on the play structures and a merry-go-round that accommodates mobility devices, a stainless steel slide for children with cochlear implants, cozy spaces where children with sensory disorders can take a break from the action, and a multitude of balance and climbing features. The project also includes a custom sensory wall, which will become part of the City's Art in Public Places inventory, along with an expanded parking lot, new shade structures, picnic tables, bar-b-ques, bicycle racks, and decorative fencing. Design of the playground was centered around a "whimsical" theme that was selected following a community survey and a special Parks and Recreation Commission meeting about the playground. The resulting playground features themed play houses, seating elements, flowers, trees, mushrooms, forest animals, insects, boulders, and logs. "Moorpark's first fully inclusive playground will be a truly unique experience for children of all abilities," said Mayor Janice Parvin. "It's unlike any other playground around, and the tremendous imagination of the design will surely spark imagination in the young minds who come to experience it." The City anticipates the start of construction in late fall or early winter, with construction expected to take about six months. Established by Congress in 1964, the Land and Water Conservation Fund receives up to $900 million per year in royalties paid by energy companies drilling for oil and gas on the Outer Continental Shelf and then distributes across the country to fund recreation opportunities from national parks to local community parks.
