LOS ANGELES, CA —A police chase in South Los Angeles Friday had moments of high drama and comedy Friday when a suspected car thief caused multiple crashes and came very close to getting away but for the watchful eye of a FOX 11 reporter Stu Mundel hovering above in a helicopter. The chase began shortly after 8 a.m. in South Los Angeles when officers attempted to stop the driver of a car that had been reported as stolen, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The driver fled, speeding past rush hour traffic on the shoulder of the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway and crashing into multiple vehicles at an intersection near 43rd Street and Avalon Boulevard before abandoning the car and fleeing on foot. Mundel, covering the chase from above, followed the suspect as he ran toward a crowded alley near 43rd Street and Avalon Boulevard and crouched down behind a parked car. One by one, officers could be seen racing past the crouching suspect in a live broadcast on Fox 11. The suspect laid down flat so the officers wouldn't see him, but he was clearly visible to Mundel above and Fox viewers at home. "Oh come on, guys! He's right there," Mundel yells as six officers run right past the hidden suspect. Alerted that they'd bypassed their suspect, the six officers run back, bypassing him yet again. "You have to understand that these officers don't know what we know," Mundel explains as the officers double back yet again to finally arrest the suspect. Ultimately the man was taken into custody about 8:20 a.m. His name was not immediately available for release. See the full FOX 11 story here.
