A poem becomes an opera... and now, an animated short film. Come preview "The Man in the Mangroves" and meet the work's creators. A one-of-a-kind presentation of The Man in the Mangroves takes place at 6:30pm ET on April 6 at the Challenger Learning Center in Tallahassee, FL. Come join Tallahassee poet Donna Decker, Oscar® and Emmy® award winning composer James "Andy" Moorer, local musician Frank Lindamood, and Toy Story producer Ralph Guggenheim for a presentation of their animated film project, The Man in the Mangroves in a look behind-the-scenes at the creation of this short animated film. This Word of South pre-event is not to be missed! "The Man in the Mangroves Counts to Sleep" is a poem from Donna Decker’s published collection, Under the Influence of Paradise — Voices of Key West. The poem depicts a fictionalized version of Donna's encounter with a homeless mathematician, living in a mangrove swamp encampment in Key West. The Man is the first speech-synthesized opera-novella, a result of Andy's two years of work transforming Donna's poem to music. And now, with animation by Squawk Productions’ Caitlin Hargarten and Sam Thompson, The Man in the Mangroves is being realized as a short animated film. In addition to the presentation of the poem and an explanation of Andy Moorer’s score, we will present the work-in-progress “animatic” of the film, along with a Q&A session with the filmmakers, moderated by Dr. Helen Decker. Get your tickets!The event starts at 6:30 and admission is free with your Eventbrite reservation. There is also free admission at the door. Seats are limited, so reserve your spot now! Doors open at 6:15. We will release empty seats to walk-ins at 6:30pm. We appreciate all donations that help with the film's production. Plus, 5% of all contributions will be used to support the Big Bend Homeless Coalition. For everyone's safety, masks are strongly encouraged for this indoor event.
