Is it ok to put a heater in my Garage ?

I want to work out in my garage, which has a water heater in it. And also quite like many other people, the gas line protrudes out of ground, outside of the garage though. And it's a 1-car garage. I'm just trying to find out, if a small space heater poses any danger being in close proximity to the water heater. And with the gas line being just outside the garage. So, just looking for some advice. And it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all.
