SOUTHWEST RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — California Highway Patrol officers from the Temecula Area office will be conducting a DUI checkpoint Friday at a spot in unincorporated Southwest Riverside County, the agency announced this week. The exact time and location were not disclosed. During the checkpoint, motorists will be detained for a few minutes while a CHP officer explains the purpose of the operation and checks drivers' licenses. Officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, including prescription medications. "The CHP would like to remind all motorists to not drink and drive. DUIs are 100% avoidable. It's simple; if you're going to drink, don't drive. Designate a sober driver and get to your destination safely," the CHP stated in a news release. Drivers convicted of a DUI face jail time, an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to authorities. Funding for the operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
