SAN FRANCISCO, CA — One person died and three others were left critically injured from a fire at a homeless encampment in San Francisco early Wednesday morning, San Francisco Fire Department officials said.
Around 1:15 a.m., fire officials responded to a report of a fire in an area along Bosworth Avenue near the Interstate Highway 280 overpass.
Firefighters were able to rescue four people from the blaze. One of the victims died, while the remaining three are in critical condition, according to Fire Lt. Jonathan Baxter.
"This fire involved many aspects, including a wildland fire, a structure fire, and confined space rescue," he said.
According to Fire Battalion Chief Patrick D'Arcy, the victims were located inside a small space inside the overpass.
"During the wildland fire, we heard calls for help and discovered there four persons up inside of the overpass and we initiated a rescue operation," D'Arcy said. "The fire was out in about the first fifteen minutes and the final rescue took about an hour."
About the 45 firefighters responded to the scene.
The cause of the deadly blaze remains under investigation.
