WATSONVILLE, CA — Watsonville's City Plaza Park is preparing to welcome a new self-cleaning restroom, which features touchless handwashing, self-cleaning, and disinfectant systems. Currently, the park has several portable restrooms. The restrooms arrived Tuesday at the park, where a foundation has already been dug. Construction crews will spend the new few weeks adding finishing touches before the facilities are open to the public, the city said on Facebook. "Because this park is so popular we really wanted to look for a restroom that we could guarantee would be usable and clean for our park users on a regular basis," Watsonville Parks and Community Services Director Nick Calubaquib told KSBW. The restroom was funded by a $3.3 million Community Development Block Grant Program, which will also be used to repair a damaged bandstand that has gone unused since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, according to a KSBW report. The grants will also be used to improve lighting and repair the fountain. Watsonville is also working to repair Ramsay Park thanks to $23 million from state and city funding, according to KSBW. Plans for Ramsay Park include installation synthetic turf at the softball field, adding lights for night soccer, and a new playground and dog park.
