Happy Friday, Sacramento! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note. First, today's weather: Mostly sunny and nice. High: 68 Low: 36. Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today: The Aggie Square Project in Oak Park is officially underway as city and state leaders celebrated a groundbreaking Wednesday morning. The $1 billion project is meant to be a major hub for innovation and technology. Included in the plan is room for research labs, commercial space and housing. It's a project that will also add thousands of new jobs. Within the last year, the project faced pushback and even a lawsuit as nearby residents were worried it would displace them and take away affordable housing. City council members emphasized the importance of keeping the residents as a major part of the project and they pledged to support residents throughout the project. A part of that support will come from a plan the city council passed last year to build more affordable housing in Oak Park, right next to Aggie Square. Along with that, Steinberg said 20% of the jobs from the project will go to people in the community. Aggie Square is expected to be completed by December 2024. (FOX40)The Board of Supervisors has confirmed the County Executive's appointment of Eric Jones as the Deputy County Executive for Public Safety and Justice. Jones' first day on the job will be Feb. 21. Jones has almost 30 years of public service experience. He most recently served as Police Chief for the Stockton Police Department since 2012, until his retirement in December 2021. "Eric Jones is a nationally recognized advocate for principled policing, strengthening relationships between law enforcement and communities and building community trust," said County Executive Ann Edwards. "His police reform advocacy efforts include extensive collaboration with local community leaders and developing law enforcement reform curriculum. We are fortunate that Eric is joining the County in this important role." The Sacramento Police Department said officers went to the 4500 block of Truxel Road around 6:35 p.m. for a shooting. There, they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds who succumbed to his injuries. Fire personnel declared the man dead at the scene. Several people were detained at the scene. No details were released on what led to the shooting. (KCRA3)Two adults and one juvenile were apprehended and arrested by Folsom Police on Wednesday night after an act of organized retail theft ended with a pursuit, a crash and manhunt in the city. Shortly after 8:30 p.m., 911 operators received a call from the loss prevention department of Dick's Sporting Goods, located at 1003 East Bidwell Street in Folsom. The caller reported four individuals, all wearing hoodies, were traveling through the store, quickly grabbing merchandise. Multiple units from Folsom Police responded to the call. The suspects fled in a white Chrysler sedan. As officers attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle, a pursuit ensued. The suspects made a U-turn into oncoming traffic on East Bidwell as they approached Creekside Drive and collided with another vehicle. The suspects fled on foot. After a brief manhunt, a 17-year-old, Fredi Rendonarriaga, 23, and Darrel Jeramiah Brookins, 21, of Stockton, were taken into custody. (Folsom Telegraph)The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors voted Thursday to declare a shelter crisis in Sacramento County as an important step towards implementing the Board's directions to open and operate sanctioned encampments. Adoption of the proposed declaration will allow staff to move with expediency on site selection and development for proposed Safe Stay Communities. Staff will work with the Supervisor in whose district the site(s) are located in to develop a community engagement plan for each site.
