SUMMARY: Under supervision, works on crews or individually to keep buildings or building areas clean and orderly; and to do related work as required. There are approximately ninety (90) buildings spread throughout the City of Monterey where custodial services are provided. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is an entry-level class in the custodial series that performs the full range of duties required to ensure that City buildings and facilities provide the highest level of cleanliness and safety for public and staff use. Work is often performed in an assigned area and may involve working around other City staff and/or the public, depending upon assignment. This class is distinguished from other maintenance classes in that the latter performs semi-skilled maintenance work in a specified area, such as streets, buildings and facilities, while the duties of this class are more related to the custodial function, with basic maintenance activities fulfilling a lesser part of the job responsibilities. Essential Functions ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Sweep, scrub and wax floors, both manually and by the use of specialized cleaning equipment. Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, shelves, etc. Clean and disinfect buildings and stand-alone public restrooms that include sinks, toilets, partition walls, baseboards, walls and doors. Replenish supplies. Empty and clean waste receptacles. Wash windows. Assist in moving and arranging furniture, supplies, and equipment. Turn out the lights and lock doors and windows. Maintain equipment used in this work. Provides maintenance and minor repair work to facilities. Follow all safety rules and regulations, and cleans up spills and unsafe conditions in a timely manner. Observe and report needed repairs of buildings and equipment. Report facility misuse/damage to supervisor immediately. Sweep entrances to public buildings. Maintain simple records, such as logs and timecards. May respond to questions or complaints from customers and members of the public. May provide initial training for new employees. Must be available to work weekends, holidays, evenings and shift work that may include split days off. Performs job duties within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; reports safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations. Provide exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment. Support the relationship between the City of Monterey and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff. Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information. Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned. Typical Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Completion of the eighth (8th) grade. Graduation of high school or GED equivalent is preferred. Experience: Some experience and/or training in janitorial, housekeeping and/or general laboring work An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Knowledge and Skills KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of: Methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work. Safe and appropriate uses of cleaning materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and custodial equipment such as buffers and floor scrubbers. Safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools. Customer service techniques. Skill in: Reading, understanding, and applying written instructions, including work procedures, product labels, material safety data sheets and equipment instruction manuals. Understanding and following oral instructions. Effectively communicating with City staff and members of the public. Maintaining simple records, such as logs and timecards. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Working effectively at remote locations without direct supervision. Performing heavy manual labor, including moving furniture and custodial equipment, and lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds, such as garbage and recycling containers, furniture and custodial supplies and equipment. Working with approved chemicals that may have odors and fumes, while adhering to safe practices. Performing routine, repetitive work to completion. License and/or Certifications LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: Must possess a valid California Driver’s License upon time of appointment and be insurable with the City’s standard insurance rate, unless otherwise approved by appointing authority. Additional Info PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Physical Demands Standing & Walking – Standing for extended periods of time and/or walking distances (1 or more miles). Lifting - Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds; use proper lifting techniques including bending at the knees. Climbing - Ability to ascend 10 ft. or more up ladder(s). Manual Dexterity - The ability to perform multiple work activities requiring a significant level of physical and mental coordination, such as using hand and power tools; repair and calibration of instruments. Visual - Acuity for driving long periods; reading literature for long periods; industry warning signs and instruments; reading maps and diagrams, computer screen. Hearing and Speech - Ability to communicate in person and over the telephone. Mobility - Ability to operate a motor vehicle, and reach, push, pull, stoop, bend, and squat. Reflexes - Ability to quickly and automatically respond to emergency and safety situations. Wear and operate in protective equipment as assigned, when working in hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions, including but not limited to head protection, eye protection, respiratory protection, hand protection, foot protection, knee protection, and full body protection. Environmental Elements Work is performed in any city building and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather; exposure to noise, dust, grease fumes, gases and potentially hazardous chemicals. Work is in and around moving vehicles and machinery. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays and be available for work on an emergency basis. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS All City of Monterey employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
