San Antonio (December 16, 2021) - Today, City Council voted in support of the Strategic Housing Implementation Plan (SHIP); Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran released the statement below: Firstly, thank you, Veronica Soto, Ian Benavidez, Sara Wamsley, and the entire Neighborhood and Housing Services Department for keeping the District 3 Office updated on the SHIP Program during the whole process. Their dedication and ongoing work on this project do not go unnoticed. Thank you to the representatives who presented at council today and all the residents who sent letters of support and feedback. We are taking a step in the right direction to breaking generations of poverty and a cycle of redlining. Specifically for District 3, this plan will open doors with the multidimensional strategies it provides. The safe approach and affordable alternatives support the housing needs of San Antonians. Accountability is key to successful review programs and improving services that affect the livelihood of our community. SHIP is mindful of the federal guidelines provided while addressing the needs of our residents. I am confident and hopeful that San Antonio Housing Authority, San Antonio Housing Trust, City of San Antonio Department of Human Services, City of San Antonio Workforce Development Office, San Antonio Housing & Services Department, HUD, and other housing experts will assist D3 constituents in minimizing the threat of housing insecurity through SHIP.
