Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Thursday, December 16th! First, today's weather: Clouds breaking for some sun. High: 52 Low: 36. Here are the top 5 stories in Sacramento today: Crews evacuated dozens of people from an apartment complex Tuesday after it lost energy following a power substation fire in downtown Sacramento. As firefighters were going door-to-door to assess peoples' medical needs, they noticed many people burning candles. That is when the fire department made the decision to get people out of the building explaining that its fire suppression systems are run on pumps, which require electricity. About 100 seniors from the facility are expected to temporarily take shelter at Sacramento City Hall. Sac RT suspended its light rail service in portions of downtown Sacramento, citing safety concerns. The power was still out as of Wednesday morning. (KCRA3) What you're seeing under construction at 6th and H Streets is the new Sacramento Criminal Courthouse, which is slated for completion in December 2023. When finished, it will relocate the current downtown and outdated Gordon Schaber Courthouse, built in 1965, at 720 9th St., to this gleaming new place of justice between G and H Streets and 5th and 6th Streets. (ABC10)The Sacramento City Council Tuesday allocated $5 million to an anti-displacement fund to help prevent displacement of residents in the ZIP codes around the planned UC Davis Aggie Square innovation district. Aggie Square is expected to create thousands of high-paying jobs on now-vacant land next to the UC Davis Health campus on Stockton Boulevard. City staff will work with community organizations and conduct surveys of residents to identify the most critical needs and best use of the funds. Examples of the types of help that could be offered include financial assistance with home repairs, emergency rent assistance and down payments. (Sacramento City Express)Sacramento is redrawing its city council districts and some community members in South Sacramento told FOX40 that they are not being treated fairly in that process. Current plans on the table show the city's redistricting commission splitting the Meadowview neighborhood up between its current District 8 and District 5. Opponents to the redistricting said the move would dilute the voting power of a minority community fighting to thrive. A coalition including the NAACP and Hmong Innovating Politics rallied Tuesday morning at Genesis Church to send a message to city leaders. The coalition is asking everyone who is worried about current proposals to register an e-comment for today's meeting of the city's redistricting commission. (FOX40)The Sacramento Kings confirmed that coach Alvin Gentry has tested positive for COVID-19 and would not coach Wednesday's game against the Washington Wizards. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Gentry said he's "largely asymptomatic" aside from a "scratchy throat." Gentry will need successive negative tests 24 hours apart before he is able to coach again, Wojnarowski said. The Kings are undergoing testing to identify any additional cases.
