Press release from the City of Malibu: December 2, 2021 WEST BASIN CALLS ON MALIBU TO REDUCE WATER USE BY 15% OR 20 GALLONS PER PERSON PER DAY AMIDST THE STATEWIDE DROUGHT EMERGENCY Following the second driest year on record and with near record-low water storage in California's largest reservoirs, Governor Gavin Newsom extended the drought emergency statewide on October 21, 2021, and urged all Californians to step up their water conservation efforts. The West Basin Municipal Water District called on community members in its 17 cities and unincorporated Los Angeles County – including the City of Malibu – to reduce their water use by 15%, or 20 gallons per person per day with its new "SUPER-CALI-FRUGALISTIC" outreach campaign. The campaign highlights how local actions can make a far-reaching impact. When we use less water as individuals, we preserve limited supplies for our communities and all Californians during this statewide drought emergency. There are historically low allocations of water from Northern California and the supplies from the Colorado River are strained - which combined make up nearly 60% of the West Basin water supply. Overall, West Basin has seen a 5% decrease of water use compared to 2020, but much deeper water conservation is needed. The SUPER-CALI-FRUGALISTIC campaign will include community outreach and education to empower community members to be conserve water, and drought kit giveaways.
