Families often face challenges and stress due to the nature of First Responder occupations. Family readiness & resilience decreases stress. All families need to find balance between home and work. For First Responder families this is challenged even more by the nature of the work. This course will focus on ensuring families understand how first responder culture may affect their loved one, help them identify resources available, and assist with developing a readiness plan for the family.   In this four-hour First H.E.L.P. workshop, co-facilitated by an experienced first responder and a first responder’s family member, participants will engage in meaningful conversations about the stressful and often traumatic life of a first responder. Participants should expect to leave the workshop with a better understanding of how stress and trauma affect first responder families be equipped with techniques to build resilience and initiate difficult conversations. OUTCOMES PREPARATION • Differentiate first responder cultures from other professions. • Recognize the effects of stress. PARTNERSHIP • Identify at least five resources for officers and family members in your agency and community. PREVENTION - A RANGE of Options • Cultivate family resilience by applying RANGE Resilience. • Develop a family readiness plan. It is the mission of First H.E.L.P. to reduce mental health stigma through education, advocate for benefits for those suffering from post-traumatic stress, acknowledge the service and sacrifice and support the families of first responders we lost to suicide, assist first responders in their search for healing, lead policy makers and legislators toward necessary change, and to bring awareness to suicide and mental health issues within public safety.
