MENIFEE, CA — The coroner's bureau has identified the second young victim of a Menifee crash blamed on an 18-year-old driver.
Aaliyah Girard, 16, of San Jacinto died in the Oct. 13 crash with her baby brother, Legend Aries Girard, 1. The wreck was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Domenigoni Parkway, just east of Lindenberger Road.
According to a preliminary Menifee police report, around 5:22 p.m. the Girard family was in a Chevrolet pickup truck towing a trailer. Their truck was side-swiped by a Ford pickup as both vehicles were heading west on Domenigoni Parkway. The collision caused the Chevy and its trailer to overturn, ejecting the two children and killing them both.
The Ford driver, an 18-year-old man, was uninjured. Jail records show he was booked into Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence. He was released in lieu of $7,500 bail and is due to appear in court in January.
Drugs and/or alcohol were not believed to be crash factors, and the 18-year-old man was cooperating with the investigation, according to police. He was not injured in the crash.
The Chevrolet driver sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention. Two otherpassengers in the Chevy were sent to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to Menifee police.
The Menifee Police Department reported that both directions of Domenigoni Parkway were closed during the crash investigation, between Leon Road and Laguna Vista Drive.
A GoFundMe page established to help the Girard family had raised more than $8,000 as of Monday afternoon. According to the page, the family is very close.
