SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — Hold onto your seeds, San Juan Capistrano. The Ecology Center is hosting a new workshop Oct. 16 where you can learn how to make the most of the seeds that come from your garden, produce and beyond. The Seed-Saving Workshop was announced Tuesday, and residents who participate will learn about the rich tradition of seed-saving and spend time in the expansive Ecology Center field collecting seeds from the center's latest harvest. According to an email sent by The Ecology Center, growing and collecting seed for future crops was an important part of all farming practices. These cultivated seeds developed varieties of strong and diverse plants. However, with the rise of industrialized agriculture came the loss of genetic diversity in crops and the knowledge needed to produce an exceptional seed. During this workshop, attendees will learn all aspects about crop seed. They will learn about plant life cycles, reproductive biology in plants, pollination methods, seed saving techniques and equipment and terminology important to understanding seed-saving. The workshop will end with a community seed swap, so think twice before you throw your excess produce into the compost bin. The Ecology Center's Seed-Saving Workshop takes place Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 32701 Alipaz St. Registration is required prior to the workshop, and fees can be found on The Ecology Center's website.
