Description
A free, outdoor screening of TRY HARDER!, a documentary focused on students at Lowell High School directed by San Franciscan Debbie Lum TRY HARDER! Directed by Debbie Lum, 2021 [not-rated] “But underneath the goofiness and gallows humor, there is a darker point being made about the impossible cycle of heightened expectations, cultural stereotyping and ever-shrinking admissions quotas for top-flight colleges. The racial profile of the high-performance Lowell is not a coincidence, but nor is it an uncomplicated advantage for any attendee, Asian or otherwise.” - Jessica Kiang, Variety TRY HARDER! is a Sundance selected doc that focuses on five students - four seniors and one junior - attending Lowell High School. The students, all high-achieving, struggle to feel competent in the elite school as they apply for college. The film treats each of its subject with an immense empathy, allowing the students to open themselves up to the audience in their process of discovering their authentic selves.
