MONROVIA, CA — Monrovia officials will receive an update on the city's equity and inclusion practices during Tuesday's City Council meeting. The ad hoc Committee on Equity and Inclusion was established to determine whether any city's policies or practices were "unjust or unfair; create structural barriers to diversity, equity, and inclusion in city governance, employment, or enforcement; or perpetuate systemic racism in city government," according to a staff report. The committee then provides the City Council a list of recommendations on changes that could be made to city policies and practices. The Committee on Equity and Inclusion has already provided52 recommendations to officials, the report read. Recommendations include having the city's human resources department "guard against bias in their evaluation process of employees" and have stated goals of increasing "ethnic, racial and linguistic diversity in the staffing of all departments." The city has adopted 19 of the recommendations, with 33 listed as pending, the report read. The Monrovia City Council will hold its meeting at 7:30 p.m., and residents can stream it online.
