The base may start out asleep... but you can wake up the base." -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom's strategist Sean Clegg on the lessons of the recall election THE BIG NEWS!! COVID Crisis "Approaching Apocalyptic" The latest figures from Johns Hopkins University show that at least 1 in 500 Americans have died of the coronavirus. That's 664,000 people and counting who died preventable deaths. As HuffPost notes, only 54 percent of Americans have been fully vaccinated to date. The other 46 percent are creating some serious consequences for everyone else. ProPublica brings us the harrowing tale of Seth Osborn, a 12-year-old boy in Florida whose appendix burst while he waited for attention in an emergency room that didn't have enough chairs for everyone. Hours passed and 12-year-old Seth’s condition worsened, his body quivering from the pain shooting across his lower belly. [Seth's father Nathaniel] Osborn said his wife asked why it was taking so long to be seen. A nurse rolled her eyes and muttered, 'COVID.' Seth is among the "collateral damage" of our pandemic response. Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas are at near or above 90 percent capacity in their intensive care units. Alabama has reached 100 percent capacity. They're filling up with unvaccinated COVID-19 patients, as you might have guessed. Wait times in hospitals are now being measured in days. "It's approaching apocalyptic," Hasan Kakli, an ER doctor in Bellville, Texas said. Clearly, more must be done. President Joe Biden met yesterday with executives of corporations that have embraced his vaccine mandate for large employers, to promote the policy's economic benefits. But pushback persists. Some 3,000 employees of the Los Angeles Police Department may seek religious or medical exemptions to that city's vaccine mandate. And 30,000 people have downloaded an online form created by a pastor in Tusla, Oklahoma, who offers his signature to those seeking religious exemptions for vaccination -- in exhange for a donation, of course. Oh, and he's running for U.S. Senate. Some who have suffered the least are finding this apocalypse quite profitable. Conspiracy-Mad GOP Seeks Personal Info on Voters Pennsylvania Republicans yesterday moved to subpoena the personal information of millions of voters as part of their insane taxpayer-financed "investigation" into Donald Trump's utterly baseless claims of fraud in the 2020 election. They want to see voters' addresses, driver's license numbers, and partial Social Security Numbers to determine "whether or not they exist." As Buzzfeed reports, it's possible the information will be shared with private vendors. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the party of small government! Court Filings Show Texas Women Taking Desperate Measures The Justice Department is seeking a judicial injunction to stop Texas from enforcing its de facto abortion ban, citing evidence of the hardships it has already created. Women are now forced to drive as far as 1,000 miles away to obtain a medical procedure, and providers told the Associated Press they are concerned "there is not enough capacity, particularly in the South, to handle the normal volume of patients that would normally have abortions in Texas." Congressional Sausage making Update: Reconciliation Edition An unofficial whip count conducted by The Daily Poster, The Intercept, and The American Prospect has found that only 17 Democrats in the House of Representatives have committed to the progressive strategy of linking the bipartisan infrastructure bill to the passage of the larger budget reconciliation package, also known as the the Build Back Better Act. Progressives want to link the two bills in order to ensure their priorities get funded, because conservative Democrats have threatened to to vote against the reconciliation bill. It's about Joe Manchin versus Bernie Sanders, basically. Nabisco Goons Rough Up Striking Workers The ongoing strike at Nabisco snack factories around the country is getting pretty tense, according to Willamette Week, a newspaper in Portland, Oregon, where the strike began. A new lawsuit filed by Teamsters union member Jesse Dreyer alleges security guards with Huffmaster Crisis Response -- a Michigan-based strikebreaking outfit hired by Nabisco's parent company, Mondelez International -- pinned him against a van and beat him for several minutes. And (memo to MR producers:) it's on video. 2.1 million That's how many people in Kenya are currently at risk of starvation due to a prolonged drought fueled by climate change. Michael Tracey’s Bizarre Speech Is Mocked Mercilessly by College Students in Connecticut - The world hasn't seen journalism this brave since he got beat up by Maxine Waters. People Are Freaking Out Over AOC's "Tax The Rich" Dress at the Met Gala - Designer Aurora James created a beautiful white and cream dress that said "Tax the Rich." Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore it to the Met Gala. PARTING WORDS "
