First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 91 Low: 59. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: For many years, hundreds of fire departments around Northern California came together in Sacramento to climb 110 flights of stairs for 9/11, honoring the firefighters who lost their lives on that day. But for the past two years, the event has been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sac Metro Fire took matters into their own hands this year and held a stair climb at their station in Citrus Heights. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Capt. Parker Wilbourn explained that some of the recruits who took part in Friday morning's stair climb were too young to remember the attacks on 9/11. As younger generations become firefighters, it's even more important to hold memorial events like the stair climb. (FOX40) An art exhibit documenting the days following the 9/11 terrorist attacks was unveiled Thursday night in Sacramento. The exhibit is called "A Space In Between." Sacramento Fire Department Assistant Chief Chris Costamagna, who went to the scene in New York on 9/11, sums it up this way: "standing at Church and Vestry streets and seeing two 110-story buildings reduced to 12 stories of rubble... we weren't ready for that. There's no concrete left in the steel, which isn't a good sign. The steel's all twisted up, and it's reduced to 12 stories. There's not going to be a lot of void spaces for people to survive in. I think we knew at the time that people … we were hopeful we would find and have live rescues." A Space In Between will be on display until October 10. (FOX40) Areas of Sacramento got their first rainfall since March overnight on Thursday. It was mostly a spectacular lightning storm, but some places did pick up some precipitation. Clouds cleared by afternoon and temperatures were below normal in most regions. If you want to look at some spectacular pictures, viewers sent their best for you to see. (KCRA3) A large homeless encampment fire was burning along Interstate 80 near the Natomas area Thursday afternoon, according to the Sacramento Fire Department. The fire was burning along the eastbound side of the interstate between Northgate Boulevard and Norwood Avenue. Commuters got a face full of smoke on their ride home, but it began to die down just before 5 p.m. (CBS Sacramento) Three Sacramento area alleged catalytic converter thieves have been arrested in Fairfield. Witnesses saw the thieves steal a converter on the 4900 block of Ridgefield Way. They provided a good description and a license plate number that police used to nab the suspects. 38-year-old Praneel Chandra, 41-year-old Amar Singh, and 42-year-old Ranjesh Singh, all Sacramento residents – were arrested and are facing felony charges. Did you know that Turn Verein is German for gymnastics club? That's how the Turn Vereins started - as an athletics club. And the Sacramento Turn Verein was established in the same year that Sacramento was established. It has a rich history here.
