Description

PALM DESERT, CA — Additional deputies will be deployed in Palm Desert on Friday, looking out for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Palm Desert Sheriff's Station did not disclose any planned checkpoints, but said the increased patrols set for the city will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and end at 3 a.m. Saturday. Officials said that patrols will also extend to Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells, which is served by the Palm Desert Sheriff's Station. The sheriff's station warned that despite its recreational legality, marijuana could also lead to a DUI, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs. Prescribed medications can also lead to a DUI. Anyone arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol could spend time in jail and pay up to $13,500, including fines, fees, classes, license suspensions and other expenses. Funding for the patrols is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
