Tallahassee Animal Services is looking to hire a part time Canine Companion Specialist: 12 -25 hour work week 2-5 hour shifts between 8am-6pm, weekdays only Compensation: $13/hr Temporary Position (no benefits) In a professional capacity, this position is responsible for walking dogs at Tallahassee Animal Services on a weekday basis. The goal of the position is to provide daily out-of-kennel-enrichment to the adoptable shelter dogs. Such care will directly improve the overall quality of life of the shelter dogs and lead to an overall reduction in kennel stress. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Animal Care Supervisor. Work is monitored and reviewed quarterly through a formal evaluation process. Essential Job Duties: The Canine Companion Specialist is responsible for walking a minimum of 3 adoptable dogs per hour with shifts ranging from 2-5 hours daily. Ideally, each dog would receive a minimum of 20 minutes on a walk with training. Dogs will include those that are difficult to leash, severely stressed, reactive on leash and those that have no training on leash. The Canine Companion Specialist would be required to keep a log of the dogs they walked during each shift and record any concerning or improving behaviors. The walks would take place on shelter property and in Tom Brown Park. Positive reinforcement training during that walk is both encouraged and necessary. Desirable/Minimum Qualifications: Individuals for this position shall possess a valid Class E driver’s license and a high school diploma or the equivalent. Character qualities essential for success in this position are, the possession of a team-player attitude, effective and concise oral and written communication skills, the ability to listen and follow directives, and a willingness to learn and adapt to change. Applicants need to have a vast understanding of dog body language, dog handling skills and be able to handle dogs up to 100lbs (most dogs being walked will average 45-75lbs). Five years of experience with dogs is recommended which can include dog ownership, professional dog training or care and animal behavior education.
