RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — The number of patients currently hospitalized in Riverside County with the coronavirus exceeded 500 Tuesday. Despite the rising number, it's still below the January peak when Riverside County COVID-19 hospitalizations surged past 1,600 patients. According to Riverside University Health System data, 515 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 countywide, up by 40 from one week ago. Of that 515 count, 104 people are in intensive care units. One week ago, the number of COVID-19 ICU patients was 87. RUHS is in the process of attempting to collect statistics tied to the number of hospitalizations involving residents who have been partially or fully vaccinated, according to RUHS spokesman Jose Arballo. Information on whether more pediatric and young adult patients are being hospitalized amid the recent coronavirus uptick might also become available, Arballo told Patch earlier this month. There was no update on the effort Tuesday and the Board of Supervisors did not request a report from the Department of Public Health on COVID-19 data during its meeting. The county's COVID-19 death toll stood at 4,686 Tuesday, up by 17 people over the seven-day period, RUHS data showed. The fatalities are trailing indicators because of delays processing death certificates that can go back weeks, according to health officials. RUHS reported Tuesday a total of 322,251 coronavirus infections since the public health documentation period began in March 2020. That number is up by 5,846 new infections from one week ago. Of Riverside County residents 12 and older, 51.6 percent are now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to RUHS.
