Worker Dies After Running Into Burning Building In Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA — One of two workers seen entering a burning commercial building in the Central Alameda area of Los Angeles Monday afternoon didn't make it out alive, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters later found the man's body at the scene. The blaze broke out just after 3:35 p.m. Monday in the 1000 block of East 60th Street. Witnesses told firefighters they say two employees run into the burning building before firefighters arrived. One of the men quickly ran back outside uninjured, but the other man never emerged, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. Crews extinguished the blaze, and the man was found dead inside the structure just before 5:45, said Humphrey. His name was withheld pending notification of his family. According to Humphrey, one firefighter suffered a non-life-threatening injury in a 4- foot fall from a ladder that occurred during the firefight and was taken to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire under investigation. "Firefighters will remain at [the] scene this evening to overhaul smoldering debris, physically assist the Coroner's staff, and support the still active fire cause investigation by LAFD Investigators," said Humphrey. "A positive identification of the deceased man, as well as the cause, time and manner of his death, will be determined by the Coroner." City News Service contributed to this report.
