MALIBU, CA — You may receive emergency alerts on your phone or email yelling fire, but don't worry — it's just a drill. The Los Angeles County Fire Department will host a virtual evacuation drill for Sunset Mesa and Topanga Canyon at 6 p.m. Thursday. For many, the drill will evoke memories of fleeing the historic Woolsey Fire that scorched more than 96,000 acres and destroyed 1,643 structures in 2018. However, authorities are looking to the months ahead, when the traditional start of the fire season combines Santa Ana winds with a landscape parched by an historic drought. Participants can register for the Zoom event in which officials will give live instructions recreating a fire scenario that will eventually lead to a mock evacuation of the areas by zone. The instructions will come from the county fire department, law enforcement, the office of emergency management, and animal care and control, according to the Eventbrite page for the drill. "Recent fires in the area highlight the importance of being ready," the Eventbrite page reads. Residents in and around Sunset Mesa and Topanga Canyon may receive emergency alerts from Los Angeles County via text message or email about the drill. The drill will be followed by a question and answer session with first responders. To register for the event or sign up for emergency alerts from Los Angeles County, visit the Eventbrite page.
