TEMECULA, CA — The white flags at Temecula Duck Pond that have served as reminders of Temecula residents who died from COVID-19 complications are being removed by the city, but officials insist the losses are not forgotten.
"We will never forget how strong our City stood amid this difficult and historic time," said Temecula Mayor Maryann Edwards. "We are stepping into the future with kindness and determination in our hearts."
As a way to continue remembering those lost to COVID-19, the city will erect a permanent bench at the Duck Pond in place of the flags.
The bench "will give us all a moment and place to pause and reflect," Edwards said.
According to the latest data from county health officials, the pandemic has so far claimed 79 Temecula residents; 7,749 Temculans who've gone in for COVID testing have turned up positive, and 7,512 of those infected residents have recovered from illness.
People who requested a customized flag that flew throughout the year to memorialize their loved ones are invited to a COVID Remembrance Flag Ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 21, at Temecula City Hall, 41000 Main Street. During the event, families will receive their loved ones' flags.
