SANTA MONICA, CA — The U.S. Coast Guard, divers and other local authorities suspended their search Monday for a woman last seen near the Santa Monica Pier, officials said. A passerby told lifeguards about 8:45 p.m. Sunday about a woman in the water, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman told City News Service. They said she was clinging to pilings under the pier. A large-scale search started Sunday night but she was not located. As of about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, divers from the Los Angeles County Lifeguards and Harbor Patrol and a helicopter were called off the search and the Coast Guard took over with its own helicopter, the 87-foot patrol boat Halibut and a 25-foot boat, said Petty Officer Richard Brahm. After daybreak Monday, divers resumed the search efforts, according to the county fire department. Responders from Baywatch Del Rey, the Santa Monica Police Department Harbor Patrol and the USCG also joined the search. The search was called off by 9 a.m. "Land-based lifeguard units and lifeguard rescue boats will continue periodic patrols," the Lifeguards Division tweeted. Anyone with information was asked to contact the U.S. Coast Guard at 310-521-3815. A large search tonight for a missing swimming last seen clinging to a pillar under the #SantaMonica Pier.
