SAN DIEGO, CA — A game between the San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals was interrupted by a shooting that unfolded outside the Washington D.C. ballpark Saturday. The game was suspended but it was scheduled to resume Sunday. Sounds of gunfire outside Nationals Park sent ticket holders scrambling for cover, with some fans ending up on the field and in the dugouts, according to multiple reports. Police said three victims were injured, with two taken to a hospital. Another gunshot victim later walked to a hospital. "Baseball games should always be safe spaces," Gov. Gavin Newsom tweeted Saturday night. "Our thoughts are with California's own @Padres and all those impacted by the shooting tonight." On Sunday, the Metropolitan Police Department released photos of two vehicles connected to the incident and sought the public's help to identify the suspect vehicles. Officers responded to the 1500 block of South Capitol Street around 7 p.m. where woman was struck by gunfire outside the stadium and two people were shot inside a car, Executive Assistant Chief of Metropolitan Police Ashan Benedict said. Shots were fired at the car from another vehicle, which was reported to have fled over the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, he said. "In the midst of confusion & then some fear, my lasting image from tonight will be looking down on the field to see 22-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr. emerging from clubhouse and sprinting down the 3B line to grab his family & pull them to safety. I thought I admired the kid before," Kevin Acee, a San Diego Union-Tribune Padres beat writer wrote on Facebook. The Padres led the game 8-4 when the shooting started. The game is scheduled to resume at 10 a.m. followed by the series finale. City News Service contributed to this report.
