SAN RAFAEL, CA — Three people were arrested and 12 were citied at a DUI checkpoint over the holiday weekend, the San Rafael Police Department said. Two people were arrested on suspicion of DUI and another person was arrested on suspicion of driving on a suspended license according to police. Twelve citations were issued for driving without a license, police said. The checkpoint was held Friday at the intersection of Lincoln and Grand avenues from 6 to 11:30 p.m. according to police. Over 650 vehicles passed through the checkpoint of which 43 were stopped, police said. Of the vehicles that were stopped, two resulted in DUI arrests. One of the arrests was related to drug use after the driver admitted to using fentanyl and methamphetamine according to police. One additional arrest was of a person knowingly driving on a suspended license according to police. That person was arrested and released with a citation, police said. Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests, police said. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired according to police. The SRPD plans to hold another DUI/Driver's License checkpoint close to the Labor Day holiday. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
