Description
Do you want to learn more about beginning beekeeping and what to consider when raising bees in a city? This is the class for you! Whether you're already keeping bees or simply curious about what beekeeping involves, there will be something for you in this class. We'll cover basics on bees, the progress of bees through the seasons, how to keep bees healthy, and what to look for at this time of year. We’ll also talk about swarming, pest management, and more. The class will also address special concerns of urban beekeeping. Are there city or county restrictions on beekeeping where you live? How can you be the best bee steward possible in an area where bees and people will inevitably meet? The class is designed for beginners so no prerequisite knowledge is required. You will get to see live bees and will most likely be able to get into a bee suit and see the bees in a hive. This will be dependent upon COVID19 safety measures that may be in place at the time of the workshop. For your safety, please wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on City guidelines. Instructors: Paul Koski's interest in honeybees, and insects in general, began as a graduate student when he studied entomology at San Francisco State University and UC Berkeley. He taught high school biology and science classes in San Francisco for many years. After retiring in 2008 he was able to spend more time with honeybees and beekeeping. Paul has tended honeybee hives in San Francisco for more than 20 years and has taught many beekeeping classes for the Garden for the Environment, San Francisco Beekeepers Association, community gardens, and other groups. No walk-up registration permitted for this course. Full garden workshop schedule What to bring to the workshop Directions to the Garden More about our Gardening Instructors
