WALNUT CREEK, CA — A new dining room to help people dealing with food insecurity in Walnut Creek was opened through a partnership with Trinity Center, and Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa. All are welcome. Trinity Center is a non-residential drop-in center to help the homeless and working poor with case management services. It is on the ground floor of St. Paul's Commons, 1888 Trinity Ave. "A significant number of Trinity Center members are low-wage workers with minimal access to a safety net," Loaves and Fishes said in a release. "Most of their members experience food insecurity and rely upon Trinity Center to meet this basic need. Trinity Center serves more than 975 unique individuals and provides over 56,000 services each year." This is the organization's fifth dining room in Contra Costa County. The others are in Antioch, Martinez, Pittsburg, and Oakley. "Loaves and Fishes is thrilled to open its fifth dining room in the county to serve people needing food in Walnut Creek," said executive director Joleen Lafayette. "We're even more thrilled that this dining room came to fruition through our long-standing partnership with Trinity Center. Not only are we able to continue serving Trinity Center members, but we're now able to provide much needed food to those in Walnut Creek facing food insecurity." The Walnut Creek dining room opened in March. Since February 2020, LFCC's meal count is up by 71 percent. Before the pandemic, LFCC was serving more than 600 meals a day. The Walnut Creek dining room is open Monday through Friday 12-1:15 p.m. It is closed on holidays. Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2021, about 42 million Americans may not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a Patch social good project; Feeding America receives 100 percent of donations. Find out how you can donate in your community or find a food pantry near you.
