Horus Aged Ales Convocation Year Four Membership Lottery Signups Please only sign up for one ticket, as all duplicates will be removed. New members will be randomly chosen on 5/12/2021 and will have 24 hours to complete their purchase. After that, if necessary, a second lottery will take place to fill any last remaining spots on 5/14/2021. If there is anywhere to put your Instagram handle when signing up on Eventbrite, please do, that will be a secondary communication outlet in addition to email, so you don’t miss the opportunity if you are chosen. The Convocation, meaning group of eagles, is the exclusive bottle membership club of Horus Aged Ales, and this will be its fourth year of existence, running from 6/1/2021 to 5/31/2022. It includes 12 bottles of beer total (all of them are club exclusives, six of the eight different beers are barrel aged, and none of these will be released to the public), 1 piece of club exclusive merchandise, and the first chance to purchase anything else Horus Aged Ales-related, single barrel whiskey picks through El Cerrito, along with any “ferrous falcon” products. Included perks of the club this year consist of the following: -1 Bottle of “Bonelli’s Distraction”: My version of the American Solera collaboration Barrel Aged Distraction’s Grasp; Imperial Stout Aged in Balcones Whiskey Barrels for 22 Months with Coconut, Geisha Coffee, Hazelnut, and Vanilla Added, 15.5% ABV [355 ml wax dipped] *Distraction had an Original Gravity of 40 Plato and is definitely on the sweet and thick side of the spectrum, but it all comes together very well. The Balcones barrels, which were also used on American Solera’s version, provided a whiskey profile I have not tasted in any of my beers before. This beer has a very cool balance between sweetness and spirit. -1 Bottle of “Pallas’s Prescience”: Non-Adjunct Imperial Stout Aged in Willett Single Barrel Store Pick Bourbon Barrels for 33 Months, 16.2% ABV (my label designer mistakenly put 13.2% instead of actual Alc. by Vol. on this label along with mixing up another future Pallas’s before they were actually printed [355 ml wax dipped] *Prescience is a beastly Imperial Stout that is perhaps the most barrel forward thing I have ever released. It picked up a large amount of Bourbon character and ABV from the unique barrels. As a result, this one will age very well. -1 Bottle of “Booker’s Bruin”: Imperial Stout Aged in Booker’s Bourbon Barrels for 24 Months with Blueberries, Chocolate, Coffee, Hazelnuts, Marshmallow, Pecans, and Vanilla Added; second Bourbon Barrel Aged variant of Blue Bear, 14.2% ABV [355 ml wax dipped] *I decided to make Bruin after people’s excitement with Blue Bear. Blueberries can dominate the flavor profile of any beer they are in, so I went with a cask of high strength Bourbon to make sure the barrel character was not overshadowed. The result resembles a boozy chocolate berry. -1 Bottle of “Supercalimillenialisticexpialidocious Falcon”: Imperial Stout Aged in Willett Experimental Bourbon Barrels Aged for 20 Months with Panama La Esmeralda Geisha Coffee, Hazelnuts, and Marshmallow Added; barrel aged version of Millenialistic Falcon; collaboration with Permanent Hangover, 15.6% ABV [355 ml wax dipped] *These one of a kind barrels were quite wet when I got them and the spirit definitely makes itself known in this one. It is lighter on the adjuncts than the fresh non barrel aged version. The combination of barrel and coffee gives this a pronounced chocolate, roast, and spice profile. -1 Bottle of “Shikra’s Crest”: Imperial Stout Aged in Weller 12 Year Bourbon Barrels for 21 Months with Marshmallow and Vanilla Added; barrel aged version of Martial’s Crest, 15.2% [355ml wax dipped] *The wheated Bourbon barrels did their magic on the Martial’s base by tempering the sweetness and rounding it out. The vanilla came through perfumey and lingers in the finish. The end result delivered Smores characteristics mixed with lots of barrel. -1 Bottle of “Couronne Noisette”: French Oak Aged Imperial Stout Aged in French Oak Barrels for 23 Months with Hazelnuts, Geisha Coffee, Coconut Candy, Coconut Syrup, Coconut Water, Desiccated Coconut, Shredded Coconut, and Toasted Coconut Added; French Oak Barrel Aged version of Hazelnut Crown, collaboration with Three Chiefs Brewing Co., 14.2% ABV [650 ml wax dipped] *The rest in French Oak really balanced this beer out. The coconut became more nuanced and savory, while the hazelnut pops a little more than the fresh version. The finish has a lingering nuttiness and oak presence. -2 Bottles of “Goshawk’s Branch”: Imperial Stout with Panama La Esmeralda Elida Estate Green Tip ASD Geisha Coffee, Hazelnuts, and Maple Syrup Added, 13.2% ABV [650 ml] *This took Goshawk’s Grasp, added a significant amount of maple syrup and even more lavish coffee beans this time around. The final product is very balanced. It is a proper return to the Goshawk series that I intend to revisit more of this year. -4 Bottles of “Isola-tion”: Imperial Stout with Chestnuts, Costa Rican Coffee, Peanuts, and Costa Rican Vanilla Beans Added; collaboration with Evil Twin Brewing New York City named after Jeppe’s daughter Isola, 12.2% ABV [650 ml] *I have been wanting to try using chestnuts in a beer for a long time and there is no better collaborator to try something new and innovative with than Evil Twin. I used roasted whole peanuts this time to amplify the nutty character and they play very well with the chestnuts. The coffee provides some balance while the vanilla rounds the sweetness out and brings everything into play. -There will be extra bottles of some of these included club exclusive beers above for purchase as well at some point, and just like last year, they will be sold first come first serve -1 free gift of a custom ceramic Horus tiki mug; Collaboration with tiki artist Thor and Tiki Farm in San Clemente, handmade in Mexico. This third edition will also be limited to just club members and is a Lakers-inspired purple high gloss glaze to commemorate their 17th title from last year -First access to purchase any Horus Single Barrel Pick Whiskeys sold by El Cerrito Liquor in Corona -First access to purchase any future local Horus events, whether it is a festival, pairing dinner, or tasting -There is another tasting similar to the Tier Zero event last year that is tentatively planned, but will not take place until the COVID situation dramatically improves. It will be limited to about 100-150 members first come first serve. Each member in attendance will receive a special piece of glassware to use at the event, and then take home. In addition, they will each get a bottle of a very special Barrel Aged Imperial Stout and Barrel Aged Sour Ale to take home with them. Both those bottles will never be for sale and will only be included with this event - There will be several additional club exclusive beers that will be made available for purchase throughout the year but will not be included for free in the membership. Most Horus beers in general will be club exclusives this year again -You will get a unique email each time that gets you into the Event Brite sales. If you share these emails with anybody else, you will be removed from the club immediately, no questions asked -Some of the barrel aged beers that will likely become ready throughout the year to look forward to are: *Double Barrel Aged Coconut Convergence (Blanton’s Bourbon Barrels, Then Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year Old Bourbon Barrels) *Rime Of The Ancient Maris (Blanton’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine) *Arctic Circle Of Life (Eagle Rare Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine) *Nectar Of The Otter (Weller Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine with Ugandan Vanilla Added) *Fur And Feather Flock Together (Blend of Blanton’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine and Blanton’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout) *Sea And Air Pastry Alliance (Blend of Blanton’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine and Blanton’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with Coconut Candy and Fine Macaroon Coconut Added) *Pallas’s Power (Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection 17 Year Old Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout) *Pallas’s Present (Old Forester Birthday Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout) *Shikra’s Harlequin (Old Forester Birthday Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla Added) *Variety of Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts with adjuncts and without adjuncts using the past single barrel whiskey picks Jazz and I did through El Cerrito Liquor *Last but certainly not least, the Special “Cloud Breaker” series featuring several different BTAC and Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts One of my big goals for this year is to be able to offer more than one bottle limits on a lot of the barrel aged beers. The barrel program is much larger than it was just a year ago, which means that there is a lot of stock for these next few years to help make this happen There is a possibility that I do an El Cerrito Liquor exclusive beer with a barrel or some of the barrels from our previous single barrel whiskey picks that would be available to the general public at his store only, like “Cooper’s Cackle” was in Year One and no member access first So far I have designed five new different club exclusive pieces of glassware for Year Four. They all feature the Horus logo in metallic gold. There is even a different spin on a crowd favorite from the past; all of these will be sold at bottle pickups cash only with a limit of two glasses per membership -Members have the first right to renew membership each year for as long as the club exists The cost to join The Convocation is the same as last year, $400 plus tax and Eventbrite fees for what is included above (12 exclusive bottles of beer, 1 gift (3rd Edition of the Horus tiki mug), and all other perks) distributed randomly across the 12 month period as the beers become ready. The membership will be active from June 2021 to May 2022. I am not adding any new club members this year, so the size of the club will stay the same. I will just be replacing those who did not renew and those that were removed last year to end up at the same total number of members of Year Three. Club allotments will be distributed as the beers become ready. There will be at least ten different pickup opportunities spread randomly throughout the year, but my goal is to have many more than that like I did this past year and also mix them up between Saturdays and Sundays. The first pickup for Convocation Year Four will be Sunday, June 6, 2021 from 1-5pm. I will announce exactly what it entails, but it will likely be for all extras from the previous year and a few of the extras from this year. If you cannot make it to a pickup, you can just grab your allotments at the next pickup or the one after that or the one after that, no big deal. Club members just need to pick up all beers by the end of the membership year (May 2022) regardless of if they will be part of the club the following year. Don’t sweat it if you cannot make it to each one or if you can only come once or twice per year, your beers will be stored until you can pick them up until the last pickup in May. Just remember I do not have a tasting room and the pickups are on specific dates, so please make sure you or a proxy can eventually come to pick up your beers. If you would like to name a proxy, you may name one in June. I will announce how to do so via email then. Also, somebody can be a proxy / trustee for more than one person if need be. A proxy can be a member of the club themselves or they do not have to be, anybody may proxy. Either only you or your proxy/trustee must pick up your allotments in person, no exceptions. Your proxy/trustee cannot be changed for the entire membership year after your first pickup. I look forward to sharing my beer with you over the next twelve months!!!
