Alten Construction, a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, recently completed construction on all three increments of a $33 million elementary classroom replacement project at Venetia Valley K-8 School. Alten Construction wrapped up the third and final phase, which began in March 2019. The entire project included interim housing and a temporary campus for first through fifth elementary school grades, demolition of the old school buildings, placing new underground utilities and the construction of a new 32,068-square-foot two-story classroom building and a 9,708-square-foot structure with a cafeteria, multipurpose room for large assemblies, family center and warming kitchen area for the entire school. The classroom building features 21 classrooms that will be used for office space and multiple curriculum, including special education and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEAM). Prior to the start of construction on the classroom and multipurpose buildings, Alten Construction completed electrical data improvements to 24 portable unit structures. The temporary classrooms, which occupied 78,000 square feet in the back of the school and adjacent to the middle school, were upgraded with the latest electrical data and equipped with audiovisual projector hookups. Alten Construction performed the site work phase of the project, such as extensive concrete work, grading and new hardscape, landscape and planting, and the structural concrete and wood framing for the new two-story classroom building. SVA Architects, Inc. acted as the architect on the project. “Alten Construction came through again,” said Dan Zaich, senior director of capital improvements, sustainable design and construction for San Rafael City Schools. “This was a challenging project in the middle of a school campus with complex logistics to maintain school operations without missing a beat, and their team did a great job. With the addition of these two buildings, Venetia Valley K-8 School will be able to grow and add to the overall experience of Venetia Valley’s students and its families.” The community school is home to nearly 740 students and is part of the San Rafael City School District, which includes eight elementary, two middle and three high schools. Located at 177 N. San Pedro Road in San Rafael, Venetia Valley K-8 School serves the communities of Santa Venetia and students from other neighborhoods throughout San Rafael. Students participate in a variety of enrichment classes, including music, Venetia Valley in Motion, coding and robotics, among others, as part of the school’s commitment to providing a rigorous, differentiated and culturally relevant academic experience.
