FREEDOM, CA — An afternoon collision that killed a pedestrian Tuesday in an unincorporated area of Santa Cruz County is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Investigators say Pinky Higgins, 55, of the town of Aromas, was driving a 2006 Volvo XC eastbound on Freedom Boulevard east of Hames Road in the community of Freedom shortly after 2 p.m., when the SUV, for reasons undetermined, went off the road and struck a 25-year-old woman walking on the shoulder. Medical personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. An 82-year-old passenger in the SUV was hospitalized with moderate injuries. Higgins remained at the scene and cooperated with CHP officers. While the collision is still under investigation, alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor, officials said.
